Why the Rider-Waite Tarot Deck Is the Perfect Choice for Every Reader

August 02, 2026

Every tarot reader eventually finds the one deck that feels like home. For me, that deck is the classic Rider-Waite tarot deck, printed by AGM-Urania. It’s the oldest deck I own, I’ve had it for as long as I can remember, and it remains my absolute favorite framework for deep self-reflection.

While every reader has their own preferences, this is the one iconic deck I am endlessly drawn back to. If you are wondering why it stands out in a sea of modern options, the answer comes down to symbolic depth, structural integrity, and intuitive clarity.

The Depth of Rider-Waite Tarot Deck Meaning and Symbolism

The primary reason I always return to this system is the depth of the imagery. The meaning layered into every single card is incredibly unique and incredibly broad. I have never encountered another deck so thoroughly and deliberately crafted, where every color, figure, and minor detail carries psychological and philosophical weight.
First published in 1909, the illustrations by Pamela Colman Smith have proven their power for over a century, serving as a foundational visual language for looking inward.

Structurally, it follows the traditional 78-card format, split into the Major and Minor Arcana. What continually amazes me about this specific Urania printing is its sheer durability. Despite the fact that I use these cards daily for myself and my clients, they still look almost brand new. The quality of the print and the card stock has truly stood the test of time, making it an incredibly practical tool for a daily practice.

Cracking the Code: How to Read the Rider-Waite Symbols

If you are looking to understand this deck on a deeper level, the original companion text by Arthur Edward Waite (The Pictorial Key to the Tarot) can feel notoriously cryptic. When he wrote it, he was bound by the oaths of secrecy required by his fellow members in the Golden Dawn community, meaning he intentionally hid or obscured a lot of the deeper esoteric meanings.

To bypass those historical restrictions and actually understand the symbols, I highly recommend the book The Tarot: A Key to the Wisdom of the Ages by Paul Foster Case. He was intimately familiar with that same tradition but chose to thoroughly and clearly depict the true symbolic meaning behind these cards, making it an indispensable guide for anyone wanting to crack the code of the Rider-Waite imagery.

Both of these books are now in the public domain. If you'd like to read them, you can find the download links over in my Bookshelf section.

The Best Tarot Deck for Beginners and Self-Reflection

Because of this unparalleled depth, I wholeheartedly recommend this system to anyone looking for the best tarot cards for beginners. If you are just starting out, it provides the absolute best foundation for learning the universal language of the cards. Most modern decks are variations of this original artwork, so learning this system first unlocks thousands of other decks automatically.

But it’s equally powerful for individuals who have no intention of reading professionally and simply want to use tarot for themselves as a personal tool for mindfulness. Because the visual storytelling is so rich and universally recognizable, it gives you the most out of every single layout. It acts as an open door for your intuition, allowing for endless, deeply personal, and highly intuitive interpretations every time you lay the cards down.

Ultimately, this deck is a timeless mirror. No matter how many abstract or modern decks enter the market, the classic Rider-Waite remains the gold standard for a reason.
