What is a vision board?

So, what exactly is a vision board? To put it simply, it's a visual representation of your goals. Vision boarding involves collecting images, quotes, and objects that represent the future you want to create and arranging them on a board for an aesthetically pleasing reminder of where you're heading.

Vision board vs. mood board

To get the desired effect from a vision board, it's essential to understand the difference between a vision board and a mood board.

Since a visual board is a visual representation of your goals, it relates to your life direction. And a mood board, on the other hand, relates to your plans. It's basically a planning tool for aesthetics—decorating a room, planning an interior design, an outfit, or an event.

Why vision boards work

Once you create your vision board, you'll end up with a visual representation of your goals. You may want to keep it in front of you every day since it's a strong reminder of what you're working toward.

Being a visual tool, such a board can be especially beneficial on those challenging days when you feel like you want to give up. Having this constant reminder of where you're trying to go in life will help you maintain motivation and inspire you to take everyday actions to move closer to reaching your most meaningful and most desirable goals in life.

How to create a vision board

There are really no strict rules when it comes to vision boards. Some vision boards represent a single goal, while others look at the bigger picture of what you want the future to look like. Some boards are made on an actual board or wall, while others are made in a notebook. Whatever representation you choose, it's essential to stick to some basic steps when creating such a board.

Step 1. Define your goals

Before creating your vision board, you must clearly understand your goals to formulate a suitable theme for the board.

Step 2. Collect pictures that represent your goals

Now it's time to think about what you'll actually display on your vision board. Magazines and online images come in handy here. You can use any elements that draw your attention. It can be paper or cardboard, fabrics, or objects (like macrame, flowers, medals, and so on). Since you are not limited to any rules, feel free to draw, paint, or craft things.

For many people, words also play an essential role in making the vision board. These might be meaningful quotes, affirmations, or just strong words such as "love," "joy," "success," etc.

Step 3. Create a perfect layout

Once you're all set with vision board elements, the next step is to lay them out in a visually pleasing way.

During this step, your vision board starts coming together. You may find yourself eliminating some elements you had previously chosen and looking for additional ones. Keep moving things around until it feels about right.

There are no strict rules on placing elements on a vision board. Yet there are 3 most popular techniques (and matching layouts) out there that might be helpful:

  1. Single goal manifestation vision board layout
  2. Four quadrants vision board layout
  3. Feng shui vision board layout

Step 4. Finalize your vision board

Once you're happy with how your layout looks, attach each element to your board, wall, or album. Next, determine where you want to keep your board so that you'll be able to see it at least twice a day.

Another option here is to create an entirely digital vision board. Doing that, you can use it as wallpaper on your phone, laptop, or computer or set it as a screensaver on any of your devices.

Updating your vision board

As time goes on and your goals evolve, your vision board will absolutely need updates. How often? It's totally up to you.

Some days you might want to swap out a few images and quotes or affirmations, while other days, you might want a total revamp.

The only advice here is to remove the elements that represent the goals you achieved and the goals you no longer pursue. You may keep these elements or even burn them. Again, it's totally up to you and how you feel.

Final thoughts

Though a vision board is a fantastic tool to help you achieve your goals, you can't just sit back and expect them to magically happen. It's time to start believing your goals are achievable, and it's time to take action.

With your vision board providing daily inspiration, you'll be one step closer to manifesting anything it is you're looking for. It will act as a potent reminder of where you want to be, so be intentional about what you choose to put on it.
